Paramahansa Yogananda was born in 1893 in Gorakhpur, India, as Mukunda Lal Ghosh, from a wealthy family of Bengal. At seventeen became a disciple of the great Swami Sri Yukteswar (in turn a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya), at the ashram where he remained ten years. In 1915, after graduating from the University of Calcutta, he joined the monastic order of his master, receiving the name of Swami Yogananda. In 1920 he came to Boston, as agent for India in the international congress of religious leaders. Here, in the same year he founded the Self Realization Religious Association Fellowship (SRF), then settled permanently in Los Angeles in 1925, through which more than thirty years, with many trips, lectures and lessons, exposed to the western world the teachings of yoga and meditation. In 1935 he made a long trip through Europe and Africa to stop then, more than a year in India, where his teacher Sri Yukteswar conferred on him the monastic title of Paramhansa (supreme swan). He entered the mahasamadhi March 7, 1952, leaving the East that the West is an immense heritage of spiritual and moral, and witnessed widespread throughout the world, as well as in Italy, the many existing centers SRF. The teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda are contained in the book Autobiography Autobiography of a Yogi, and many of his writings, including lectures, speeches and comments, stored and disseminated and published by the SRF, either directly or on its behalf, in over 25 countries.
